Barbara - In Memoriam July 2015
Barbara H. Morgan
Barbara was born July 9, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, to King and
Dagny (Olsen) Derr. Like her brother and sister, she grew up in
Los Alamos, NM, and graduated from high school there in 1958. She
attended Pomona College and the University of New Mexico and graduated
from Pomona with honors. After 11 years of working in libraries,
she enrolled in graduate school at the University of Washington.
Bored with her classes in her library masters program, she took a
FORTRAN class. After that, as she put it, she “jumped into computing
with both feet, enormous enthusiasm, and not much background.” She
eventually became the director of academic computing services at
UC Berkeley and served in that capacity from 1979 – 2004, when she
retired. She traveled widely and enjoyed new places as well as old
friends; she loved bright clothing and interesting jewelry, especially
if it was turquoise; she believed in the solidarity of women
(especially women involved in IT in the early, almost completely
male computer world) and the responsibility of sharing with those
less fortunate; and she kept herself fit and active but died suddenly
on July 24, 2015.
Barbara was married from 1961-1980 to Robert Teeple, an artist with
whom she remained good friends till the end of her life. From
1984-1986, she was married to Don Stockard. In 2002, she and Ruben
Zelwer married, after they had been together for 17 years. He died
in 2004, just as they were both about to retire.
Grateful to have shared her life are family members in New York,
Connecticut, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, California,
North Dakota, and Venezuela, and a myriad of friends all over the
map.
